Two construction projects, one nearly finished and one that is still in the “potential” stage, were a highlight during Monday’s Huntsville School District Board meeting. 

Huntsville High School senior Savannah Villines was named 2022 homecoming queen on Friday.

Feb. 9, 2021: • High School Principal Roxanne Enix was informed  of sexual-abuse allegations.  Enix informed Director of Athletics Tom McCollough, who calls then Superintendent Audra Kimball about the allegations. 

Huntsville High School will celebrate homecoming with a parade, pep rally and football game against Elkins on Friday.

Audra Kimball, former Huntsville School District superintendent and current personnel and program compliance director, and former junior high school basketball coach Kaleb Houston have been summoned to appear for charges of failure to notify by mandated reporters in the first degree, according to Fourth Judicial Prosecuting Attorney Matt Durrett. 

The Huntsville School District has “no plans in the immediate future to propose an increase,” in teacher pay, Superintendent Jonathan Warren said. Candra Brasel, superintendent of the Jasper School District, which includes the Kingston campus, said she is hoping the state will step in to increase teacher pay during the upcoming legislative session.

Work continues on an activity center at the Elkins High School campus, according to Elkins School District Superintendent Jeremy Mangrum.

Watson Primary and Huntsville Intermediate schools celebrated Grandparents and Grand Friends on Sept. 9, including third-grade student Presleigh Thomas and her grandparents Glenn and Denise Thomas.

Personnel is the Huntsville School District’s biggest cost but also the biggest responsibility, the Huntsville School Board was told during a school finance training session on Sept. 6 with Dan Lovelady, vice president of capital markets at First Security Beardsley, the district’s financial advisor. 

Independent candidate for Madison County Judge Jeremy Updegraff asked for the immediate removal of Huntsville School Board member Duane Glenn at Monday’s board meeting.

A federal district court judge dismissed a Title IX lawsuit brought by Becky Nelle against the Huntsville School District after approving a settlement proposed by the two parties. 

The Huntsville School Board approved taking the next steps in the process to work with the state on a unique energy savings program, got their first look at standardized test scores from Spring 2022, and heard community members demand board member Duane Glenn’s resignation (see story elsewhere on The Record's website) during the board’s September meeting on Monday.

Former Madison County Sheriff’s Office deputy Lynn Whittle on Thursday was found guilty of misdemeanor third-degree battery for using a taser on a Huntsville High School student while Whittle was employed as a school resource officer.

A federal judge delayed approving a settlement agreement in a Title IX lawsuit against the Huntsville School District alleging sexual abuse and violence until he had a chance to review a U.S. Supreme Court decision handed down in April.

Huntsville High School Senior Arissa Jones knows dedication and hard work.

Whitney Comer, owner of Little Fisher’s Preschool in Huntsville, also serves as president of the Huntsville School Board. Comer was one of the new board members elected earlier this year. She then was chosen as board president. 

The Institute for Rural Journalism and Community Issues at the University of Kentucky in Lexington has awarded The Madison County Record and its publisher and staff the 2022 Tom and Pat Gish award for courage, integrity and tenacity in rural journalism for its reporting on the Huntsville School District’s attempted coverup of sexual-abuse allegations by students on the school’s basketball team and its work on transparency in government. 

Attorneys for the Huntsville School District and Joey McCutchen, representing Becky Nelle, will go before U.S District Judge Timothy L. Brooks on Thursday to seek his approval of a settlement agreement in an ongoing Title IX lawsuit filed last September by Nelle on behalf of a minor. 

Classrooms opened in Huntsville and St. Paul on Monday for the 2022-23 school year. Kingston and Elkins opened on Tuesday.

Financial controversy at the state level is hitting home for the Huntsville School District, Superintendent Jonathan Warren informed the Huntsville School Board during the board’s August meeting on Monday.
