City leaders attended a meeting at the Arvest Bank Annex Monday night to discuss the Huntsville Strategic Plan, a process that began on March 4 in answer to an online survey conducted by the City of Huntsville to find out areas citizens think need most improvement.

AT Smith of Hindsville was presented a Certificate of Continuous Membership by the American Legion on March 21 during Post 137’s regular meeting at the Masonic Lodge.

A new program being implemented in the Huntsville School District will give some students a “second chance” at staying in school after being expelled for drug and alcohol offenses. 

The budget and personnel committees of the Madison County Quorum Court met Monday to decide on a request made by Sheriff Ronnie Boyd at the court’s March 18 meeting to add one sergeant’s position and seven new corporal’s positions to his department.

The Madison County Quorum Court will refer a request from Sheriff Ronnie Boyd for a new sergeant and additional corporal positions to the personnel and budget committees as the request will add about $17,000 to the county’s budget.

EUREKA SPRINGS — Eureka Springs Hospital officials including chief executive officer Angie Shaw hosted a town hall meeting Thursday, March 14, at The Auditorium to discuss the hospital’s recent designation change.

ST. PAUL — The  St. Paul Town Council approved two purchases for different aspects of its public safety operations during the council’s monthly meeting on March 12. 

Greg Wheeler, coordinator of the Madison County Department of Emergency Management, spoke to the Huntsville Kiwanis Club last week about the April 8 eclipse, which he said will put the county in 99 percent darkness.

Huntsville Head Football Coach and Dean of Students Eric Henderson was reprimanded last month after an investigation by the Huntsville School District found he bullied students. 

Madison County Sheriff Ronnie Boyd said a deputy accidentally discharged a firearm inside a patrol vehicle and that deputy has received a “letter of counseling” in his personnel file as a result of the incident.

Earlene England marked her 50th year with Arvest Bank Huntsville (formerly First National Bank), becoming the fourth-longest tenured  associate in the bank’s four-state coverage area. England modestly declares it’s “not that big a deal,” ascribing her achievement to a strong lifelong work ethic.

Though two homes were damaged by falling trees, there was little damage and there were no reports of flooding in Huntsville or Madison County overnight Thursday as thunderstorms made their way across Northwest Arkansas.

Approximately 100 people with the Texas Society of Architects visited a Huntsville home sitting atop Governors’ Hill built by world renowned architect E. Fay Jones as part of their 2024 Design Conference, which took place in Northwest Arkansas on March 1-3. 

Though Madison County received its share of road damage due to inclement weather in January, it will not receive federal funding for repairs as the State of Arkansas overall did not meet the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s aid threshold. However, the county will be reimbursed by the state for any needed repairs.

The Huntsville City Council on Monday night heard the first reading of an ordinance specifically permitting city employees to do limited business with the city, an action recommended by City Attorney Jessica Fritts. A section of the ordinance permits the city to pay Police Chief Todd Thomas $4,550 for his work restoring the Basham Building.

The Huntsville School District will have a four-day school week next year after the Huntsville School Board approved the change in a 5-1 vote. Board President Whitney Comer voted against the motion and Board Member Natalie Swafford was absent.
