Polk Square in Huntsville lit up for the Christmas season Friday at the annual Lighting of the Square.

FAYETTEVILLE, WEST VIRGINIA — New River Gorge became the nation’s second national river in 1978, its’ designation following the country’s first national river established in 1972: Arkansas’ Buffalo National River.

Party filing for all Democratic and Republican offices (including nonpartisan filings) ended at noon on Tuesday.

The City of Huntsville along with Madison County is launching a new mass notification system called Huntsville Madison County Alerts, powered by Genasys, Inc. The new system will go live at 9 a.m. Friday and replaces Code Red for the city.

Visitors to the Basham Building will step back 100 years into Huntsville’s history once all phases of its renovation are completed, Police Chief Todd Thomas said.

The following felony cases were resolved in Madison County Circuit Court during the month of September.

The first case of H5N1 avian influenza in Arkansas poultry in 2023 was reported on Oct. 31 in a flock of 31,600 commercial broiler breeder pullets at a farm in Madison County.

The Huntsville dam, once a source for the city’s drinking water, received its first “notching” last week in an effort to remove the concrete stream barrier, along with an overflow structure and a low water crossing on War Eagle Creek.

In an emotional and sometimes confusing special meeting, the Madison County Quorum Court on Monday night voted to purchase a new Mack roll-off truck for the Solid Waste & Recycling Department that was recommended by department manager Christal Baker last summer.

The issue of a new roll-off truck for the Madison County Solid Waste & Recycling Department remains unresolved and could come before the quorum court again at its November meeting, County Judge Larry Garrett said.

Madison County is on track for the new sheriff’s office and detention center, with a round of rebidding set for Nov. 15, Jason Roberts, project manager for Smith-Doyle Contractors, Inc., said.
