Column about county happenings missing Kingston Music on the Square
I read your column about things to do this summer in Madison County and felt you left something out. There was no mention of Kingston’s Music on the Square (MOTS) summer concert series.
MOTS is hosted by Kingston Library and the Friends group and this will be the 14th summer. Since 2006 folks have gathered around the Kingston Square on the last Friday evening of June, July, August and September to enjoy local entertainment, the very thing you mentioned as one weakness in our county. So, let’s promote what we have here! Providing more entertainment options for the area is the main reason for MOTS.
Preston, if you’ve never attended, please venture eastward and see for yourself. We’d love a chance to make you a fan. Many Madison County residents are finding their way to the Kingston Square for these events, and also exciting is the fact that many residents outside Madison County have discovered us, too. MOTS is free to attend and there’s no official count, but a good guess would be upwards of 800-1,000 attendees each summer with interest continuing to grow.
Two bands are booked each evening of MOTS, bringing a variety of country, bluegrass, folk music and much more. Some of our talented performers are local and some come from out of state. One will be traveling from Nashville in July. Some of our musicians play across the country and a few have even performed internationally. At least two MOTS performers have had reviews in The Washington Post. Recently, a reporter from Arkansas Democrat-Gazette contacted me and requested information about MOTS. She felt our events worthy of including in a writeup, somewhat similar to yours, about summer music events going on within the northwest Arkansas area. The reporter included the entire summer Kingston MOTS schedule in the What’s Up publication, along with a paragraph about our events, and a color photo. Nice coverage.
In addition to MOTS, Kingston Library hosts a variety of other community-minded summer activities. Thanks to these efforts, Madison County is a better place with more summer activities available to residents of all ages. I think other libraries in the county do similar things. These surely also deserve acknowledgment when mentioning ways to spend summertime in Madison County.
