Registered sex offenders are targets of a scam, according to Lt. Russell Alberts with the Madison County Sheriff’s Office.

Alberts said the office has gotten numerous calls from people who have been targeted. In the scam, a person who claims to be a sheriff’s deputy offers to remove active warrants for a certain amount of money. One scammer even claimed to be Sheriff Rick Evans, Alberts said.

“If you have warrants, we’ll come knocking. We won’t call you,” Albert said.
